Strengthening Trust With the Person Who Challenges You Most

Building trust in your team doesn’t come from the people who are easy to lead; it comes from the ones who aren’t. Trust is the currency of leadership, and these behaviors increase your balance:
1. Seen
Identify what you don’t know about them and ask one intentional question that reveals their motivations, pressures, or working style. Clarity replaces assumptions.
Pause before you react and consider alternative explanations. Leaders who question their assumptions create space for better connection.
2. Valued
Spot one strength they bring to the team and name it directly. Recognition builds confidence and accelerates trust.
Initiate a quick check‑in, ask a genuine question, or offer a small act of support. Micro‑interactions shift relationships more than formal meetings ever do.
3. Capable
Ask: “What’s one thing getting in your way right now?” Then remove it. Leaders earn trust when they make work easier, not harder.
Choose one commitment, even a small one, and deliver on it quickly. Consistency strengthens trust because people can rely on your word.
Trust grows fastest in relationships you intentionally invest in. Which strategy will you use this week to strengthen trust?
